Steve has served on our Board as Treasurer since MCCP Foundation’s inception in 2009. Steve is a Director at Deloitte. In January 2012, he assumed the role of President when Terry O’Hara Lavoie’s term expired. Terry remains on our Board as our most valued Past-President.

In other Board news, we want to welcome Anne Rieger of INOVA as our newest Board member. Anne oversees Community Safety Net programs for INOVA.

The Employees Community Fund of the Boeing Company has provided a grant to the MCCP Foundation for medical and dental care of our children. The Boeing Employees Community Fund (ECF) is a unique employee-owned and directed giving program that allows employees to support the needs of their local communities via tax-deductible recurring payroll deductions or one-time gifts. Each ECF board and committee is responsible for carefully studying organizations that appeal for support in accordance with all governing Boeing policies, regulations and operating procedures.  We are most grateful to the Boeing ECF!

Craig Kendall, President of Financial Investments, Inc. of Herndon presented a check to Margery Sher, Executive Director of the Medical Care for Children Partnership (MCCP) Foundation on October 31 at FII offices.

Ms. Sher expressed her gratitude for the support, and noted that FII’s grant will enable many children to receive the medical and dental care they need. Mr. Kendall explained that Financial Investment Inc.’s philanthropic mission is to have a positive social impact on those in need in Northern Virginia, so the contributions are targeted at helping socially and economically disadvantaged youth and young families who are striving to become financially independent. The hope is that these young people and families will become contributing members of society, and continue the circle of giving. “It is evident,” he said, “that children who are sick or in pain cannot succeed in school and gain the educational footing needed for success. It is our pleasure to support MCCP Foundation and thereby invest in our community’s children.”

MCCP Foundation funds health care for the children of uninsured working families in Fairfax County. Despite being one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, there are many thousands of children in our community who don't have access to doctors and dentists when they need them. This is a critical problem. Good health is essential to school success, and for attaining the foundation for a successful life. MCCP Foundation is a proven model of a public/private partnership that works to solve an urgent community problem.

The County case managers at the Department of Family Services are going full throttle this month.

Panicked parents are trying to find out where they can take their children for physicals and immunizations so that they will be allowed to enroll in school in a few weeks. Relieved parents learn about the MCCP program and they are not only able to get the needed physicals, but they are hooked up with a pediatrician who will care for them on a regular basis…so no more panic! When the child becomes ill, the parent knows who to call. If the child needs a specialist, the County caseworker will locate one who will take the child. The child will begin to receive regular dental care. These are all great burdens lifted from a family. And the children can start the school year healthy and ready to learn. And we all know, there is no greater gift than good health.

But….the MCCP Foundation needs to pay for the medical and dental needs of our children. We pay the bills because YOU are generous and donate! They often need extensive work. Since the generous dentists in our network provide care at reduced rates, each child’s dental work costs an average of $325. This amount of money enables our kids to get the fillings, root canals, and other work that they desperately need, and end their visits with a teeth cleaning and a happy smile. Won’t you please help all our children get that smile? Remember dental care is not really about the cosmetic factor; dental problems can spread to the rest of the body and cause major health problems. You may even remember the very sad case, a few years ago, of a boy in our metropolitan area who died from complications of an untreated dental problem. We can never let that happen again!

Come celebrate our fabulous, effective public/private partnership known as MCCP which makes sure that every child in our community has the physicians and dentists they need. Children with untreated medical problems have too much stacked against them. Children in good health have every chance to succeed. Together, we will not let any child in our community go without medical care. That’s worthy of celebration, isn’t it?

I am generally a rather bold character, but walking into the ocean or getting into a swimming pool transforms me. I cautiously put my toes in, and then my feet, and then I retreat until my courage rebuilds. Again, back at the edge, I walk right in…to my ankles…and then back up, and so on, retreat and advance until an enormous amount of time passes, and all friends have long since given up on me as they move on to enjoy themselves tremendously.
 
And so it seems I am with Facebook and blogging. Friends ask me to do it. Real friends, I mean. The old fashioned kind. But they seem to have transformed themselves into the new-type friend as they ask me to friend them. Why do I have to friend a friend who is already a friend?
 
But eventually I do get into the water. I am the rotten egg, to be sure. But what about last but not least? Couldn’t I be that, instead of a smelly, barren home to a non-existent bird?
 
Ok, so here I am. Anything for MCCP Foundation! This rotten egg is hoping to be “last but not least”. I am, after all, very competitive. And so…please watch this space for a new superlative BLOG to begin!
