Join the Advisory Council

The MCCP Advisory Council is comprised of partners from many segments of Fairfax County — the business, foundation and medical communities, along with client recipients and individual citizens. Each member of the MCCP Advisory Council serves on a subcommittee providing guidance on such issues as marketing and public relations, resource development, program development, finances, advocacy and volunteering.

Public/Private Partnership

MCCP works because of our far-reaching network of public and private partners that includes health care providers, businesses, community organizations and county government.

Here’s how MCCP provides care for children at just one quarter the national average cost:

  • Fairfax County Government pays ALL administrative costs (and some health care costs).
  • The Northern Virginia Family Service provides case management services.
  • Our network of 500+ providers offers discounted care to program participants.
  • Preventative care in a physicians office (costing $50) versus emergency room (costing over $700)

We need your help to reach children in Fairfax County who still do not have access to quality health care. As an MCCP partner, you can help children who do not have insurance live as those who do by:

Culturally Competent Care

The Medical Care for Children Partnership recognizes that our participating families face a variety of language and cultural barriers to receiving quality, comprehensive health care.

In partnership with Northern Virginia Family Service, MCCP provides multilingual case managers who work with MCCP families to link them with culturally appropriate medical care. Case managers make the appointments needed and work with families to help them better understand how to navigate our health care system. The case managers link families with community resources and services as needed.

Children of the Working Poor

The parents whose children are served by MCCP are the working poor. To make ends meet, they often have to work multiple jobs without health benefits. These families are uninsured or are pending eligibility for Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS) or FAMIS Plus. They have incomes of less than 250% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (for example, a family of four with household incomes less than $51,625 qualify).

Living in Northern Virginia is expensive. Families without insurance are often forced to choose between medical care, food or rent. Emergency room visits are expensive, so children’s illnesses are not treated until they become serious. Because they are sicker, children miss more school and parents miss more work. Lost workdays translate into lower paychecks for parents.

MCCP eases the financial burden on these hard working families. Children who receive timely preventative attend school more regularly, enabling their parents to be more reliable employees. Having dependable, affordable health care is a solid step on the road to financial security for Fairfax County families.

Medical Home

The Medical Care for Children Partnership believes that every child deserves a medical home. MCCP has linked over 75,000 children with a medical home since its inception in 1986. Over 500 health care providers work in partnership with MCCP to provide medical homes for Fairfax County children. MCCP leverages the resources of the business community, civic organizations and health care providers to offer quality health care. Yet, our work is not done. Thousands of children in Fairfax County still do not have insurance. MCCP is committed to identifying the uninsured children and linking them to a medical home.

A medical home is not a building, but rather a team approach to providing comprehensive primary health care services in a high-quality and cost-effective manner. Together, families, health care professionals and community service providers identify and access all medical and non-medical services needed to help the child and family.

This care and attention is a basic building block for future success. Children who participate in our HMO program do better in school because they miss fewer days due to illness. They are more likely to receive prompt preventative care for chronic illnesses because parents pay nothing or a nominal co-pay for an office visit.

Families whose children do not have a medical home often find that the emergency room is the only option for care. These visits are expensive, and families must often sacrifice other necessities to pay for their children’s care. Participating in MCCP eases the financial burden on working families by affording them the opportunity to receive care at a physician’s office which averages $30 per visit as opposed to hospital emergency rooms which can cost $700 or more per visit.

Overview

What is the MCCP Foundation?

• The MCCP Foundation funds health care for the children of low-income, uninsured working families in Fairfax County.

 • Despite being one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, there are still many thousands of children in our community who don't have access to doctors and dentists when they need.

 • MCCP has been keeping children healthy for 25 years through the generosity of our community!

How does it work?

• MCCP-eligible children have working parents who don’t have access to health insurance and whose incomes are too high for Medicaid but too low to be able to afford health care – for a family of four, the income level cut-off is about $55,000.

• MCCP Foundation is a public, private, partnership that is a proven model of community problem-solving. Private donations and grants are leveraged with local tax dollars to provide high quality health care. Our partners are Fairfax County government; our corporate, foundation and individual financial supporters; and the medical community—Kaiser Permanente and 300 other doctors and dentists who provide low or no cost care.

• MCCP provides families with a support system that ensures access to health care. Fairfax County provides case management for our families so that they have the supports they need. Supports include transportation, language assistance, and help accessing specialty care that might be needed.

Some success stories:

Eddie Royal was an MCCP-supported child. He had terrible asthma problems but now plays for the Denver Broncos!

Emmanuel is a brand new Eagle Scout and will start VCU in the fall. He doesn’t know yet if he will be an Air Force pilot or a lawyer. Maybe both?

Ericka is an MCCP graduate who is a junior now at George Mason working on her engineering degree.

Jorge Ramallo is a medical student at Yale University. He was enrolled in the MCCP program and achieved great success as a student.

Please remember:

• Our mission is to assure that every child receives the medical and dental care that they need to thrive and realize their dreams in good health.
• Sick kids can’t wait for the economy to improve, and we’re not waiting either.
• MCCP Foundation is a successful, established model that works.
• Your donation is not just charity, it is an investment in our community’s children and, therefore, in our collective future.
